...I just had a sizeable tree removed. I now have an ugly stump I want to remove. What are 2 reasons why I should avoid grinding the stump?
The 2 reasons why you should avoid grinding the stump are:

1.) Even though what is left of the stump after grinding will now be below ground, it will create a haven for termites and carpenter ants.
NOTE:
Stump grinding never gets the entire stump or roots unless it is a small stump.

2.) Over time as the rest of the stump and roots decay, you will have to place dirt (more than one time) into the area the stump was ground.
NOTE:
Because the stump below the ground is now decaying, the area above the stump will now be sinking-creating a sink hole.

...When is the only time I should consider grinding a stump?
The only time you should consider grinding a stump is when the stump is located too close to your home, your driveway or perhaps other trees or shrubs.
