To pick out the best lumber for your project, you need to know your woods, you need to know your saw mill cuts, you need to know your finishes and, you need to answer the following 6 questions...

1.) Is the lumber straight or does the lumber have a bow in it?

2.) Does the number have a lot of knots in it.

3.) Does the lumber have any splits in it?

4.) Does the lumber have any knots in-peciifcally speaking in the middle?

NOTE:
A knot in the middle of the lumber will make the weakest point of the lumber even weaker.

5.) Does the lumber have a crown?

6.) Is the lumber cupped?

...What are the different cuts of lumber?
There are 3 different cuts of lumber.

1.) Plain Sawn

2.) Quarter Sawn

3.) Rift Sawn

...What is plain sawn lumber?
Plain sawn lumber is where the annual rings are 30 degrees or less to the face of the board.

...What is quarter sawn lumber?
Quarter sawn lumber is where the annual rings are 60-90 degrees to the face of the board.

...What is rift sawn lumber?
Rift sawn lumber is where the annual rings are 30-60 degrees to the face of the board.

Rough sawn or rough cut lumber is a plain cut of lumber that has not yet been plained, kiln dried or chemically treated.

Stacking:
...What is the proper way to stack lumber?
The proper way to stack lumber is as follows:

Stack the lumber with its narrow side down.

For example, let's say you are stacking 2x10s. You would not stack the 2x10s on the 9.5" side face down. You would stack the 2x10s on the 1.5" side face down.

NOTE: If the lumber is stored outside, be sure you elevate it and cover the lumber with a tarp.

The proper way to store lumber is as follows:

...Why should I not store lumber outside, even if the lumber is elevated and covered, for an extended period of time?
Lumber is porous. If lumber is left outside for an extended period of time-even if elevated and covered, lumber will absorb moisture and warp.
