Never give an estimate without meeting the person who is paying for the job. For example, let's say a customer wants an estimate to build a deck using ipe off their kitchen. They say, "Stop over any time to take the measurements. Then, send me the estimate via email or drop the estimate in my mailbox."

...Why should I never give an estimate without meeting the person paying for the job?
You always want to meet the customer personally. There's nothing better than meeting face to face. Believe me, this meeting could be what seals the job. Plus, consider this. If they're going to waste your time by having you come on over and give them an estimate, the least they could do is be home, right?

...As a contractor, what 2 things should I always do when giving an estimate to a customer?
1.) Be absolutely sure you put your estimate in writing.

2.) Then, be sure you have the customer sign a copy for you.
